About Grounds Maintenance

Our goal is to provide an aesthetically safe and functional campus for all students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Awards Received

Grounds Maintenance was nationally recognized with an Honor Award by the Professional Grounds Management Society. Texas Tech Received this Honor Award for exceptional grounds maintenance in October, 2018.

PGMS Announcment

Texas Tech University is now home to the largest honey locust tree in the state of Texas. With a height of 56 feet and a crown spread of 77 feet, this honey locust made it into the Texas Big Tree Registry for Texas Tech.

The Grounds Maintenance Department is responsible for the maintenance of:

  • Brick walks and sidewalks
  • Fabrication and installation of tables, benches, and bicycle racks
  • Fountains, irrigation, water wells, and ponds
  • Lawns and plant materials
  • Operation of the university plant nursery
  • Pedestrian, vehicular, and bicycle signage
  • Removal of ice and snow during inclement weather
  • Striping, sweeping, and repairs of parking lots and streets
  • Traffic signals

Areas of responsibility, in addition to Texas Tech's main campus, include the Larry Combest Center for TTUHSC, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, North Lubbock County Farm Facility, Grantham, the International Textile Center, Reese, SouthPark, and the Chancellor's Residence.

Grounds-Use Permit

A grounds-use permit, issued by the Student Union & Activities department is required for the use of campus grounds. The link for this form can be found here. Grounds Maintenance and other service departments advise and provide assistance as necessary for scheduled events. Contact 742-4677 for assistance or service.
Operation of vehicles/equipment on walks and lawn areas is not permitted unless prior arrangements have been made with Grounds Maintenance to ensure that damage to landscape features does not occur.

Digging Permit

Most of the University's utilities distribution and telephone systems are underground. Excavations and digging must be approved in advance and meet the installation requirements of the Operating/Policy and Procedure, 76.42 Underground Trenching and Utilities. Call 1-800-DIG-TESS or contact Grounds Maintenance at 742-4677 for any questions.
